Whenever you pick Penny from a chest, you'll receive a Treasure Map. Each map points to a different treasure hidden somewhere in the map, and if you find it, you'll receive a lot of loot.
This loot improves as you evolve Penny, and this page provides details of all the available loot sets for each evolution.

Double Gems
Remember that Gems are doubled in the last minute of each battle, so collecting maps towards the end can provide an advantage.
