Provisional Values
All the values and stats mentioned in this article aren't final, they are based on the Developer Build to which Super Creators have access to. Usually nothing significant changes, but keep this warning in mind whenever you read update details.
Squadmas update!
The update is scheduled to be released this next Monday, December 16th, and today we get to share everything about it. Unlike with most of the previous updates, there isn't a new World, new Troops or new Evolutions. Most of the changes are meant to improve the player experience and add new ways to play Squad Busters.
Page contents:
New Game Modes
Until now, there was only one way to play Squad Busters; the goal is to be the player with the most Gems when the battle time concludes. But this is changing with this update, as Supercell introduces new game modes that change this core goal.
Showdown
Fight and Survive!
Showdown is a new 5-player Game Mode where the objective is to be the last Squad standing. Build the strongest Squad and outlast other players to win the day!
This is a new mode that gives more attention to PvP action, and removes the layer of Gems. There's no battle timer either, it's all about busting opponent Squads!
Until now, you had to find a balance between collecting Gems and growing your Squad, which gives room to different strategies such as farming and troops like Bandit. By simplifying the goals of the battle, the game becomes more straight-forward: you just collect Coins to make your Squad more powerful.
Due to the conceptual simplicity, new players will be introduced to the game with Showdown mode after the update.
This isn't to say the mode is necessarily easier than Gem Hunt, timing when to avoid/fight other players can be challenging. To be able to tell more about it, we'll need more time to test it against human players.
When a Showdown battle starts, you'll first see a screen that displays who your 4 opponents will be.
Upon release, players will only be able to join this mode individually; meaning that you won't be able to play against friends in Party lobbies.
More details about the Showdown mode
- Gem Mine is replaced by a Coin Mine.
- Mega Potions give your Squad bonus speed, damage and damage resistance.
- New HP and Squad size indicator.
- Busting Squads gives Coins.
- Blue Boxes are replaced by Golden Boxes.
- Chests reappear faster.
- Vines close in circle shape, but the center isn't in the center of the map.
- Bandit and Trader don't appear in troop rosters.
- Only a few mods are available.
::: detail Mega Potion stats
Mega Potions give a fairly strong buff to the troops of your Squad during 9 seconds:
- Move speed: +20%
- Damage: +50%
- Hit Speed: from +29% to +47%, depending on the troop; +42% on average
- Damage protection: -60% of incoming damage
The combination of Damage and Hit Speed buffs give a total DPS increase of around +113%, so more than double.

Duo Gem Hunt
Hunt Gems Together!
Duo Gem Hunt is all about hunting for Gems together with another player! Play with a friend, or a random friendly stranger, and beat 3 other teams in amassing the largest Gem count!
Four pairs of players compete in a mode that is similar to normal Gem Hunt. Duos are only eliminated after both players are busted at the same time, but if your partner remains alive, you respawn and draft a new Squad.
When a Duo Gem Hunt battle starts, you'll first see a screen that displays the 4 teams.
During the battle, each player has their own count of Coins and Gems; Gems are added together to create the Team Score.
The Team Scores are visible at all times on the left side of the screen, where you can also see teams coded with different colours.
Team Colours
The 4 team colours are:
- Yellow (My Sin) (#fbb52c)
- Red (Rose) (#fc1f7d)
- Pink (Pink Flamingo) (#f865f9)
- Blue (Bright Turquoise) (#04defb)
One of the main differences that Duos have from normal battles is the lack of friendly fire. Troops from the Squad of your partner behave as if they were yours for area effects, which can be very powerful with troop buffs and spells.
If you are busted and your partner manages to stay alive, you'll enter a draft screen in which you pick the troops you want for your respawn.
Respawn Tiers
The amount of troops you get to pick will depend on the battle time left; the more advanced the battle is, the bigger the Squad you can draft. There are 5 different respawn tiers based on this:
Time Left | Respawn Time | Picks |
---|---|---|
4 - 3 min | 6 s | 2 |
3 - 2 min | 7 s | 3 |
2 - 1.5 min | 8 s | 4 |
1.5 - 1 min | 9 s | 5 |
0 - 0 min | 10 s | 6 |
Chest Taps
After the battle ends, the chest taps you get are:
Placement | Taps |
---|---|
1st | 9 |
2nd | 6 |
3rd | 3 |
4th | 0 |
Placement Rewards
After the battle ends, the rewards you get based on placement are:
Placement | Taps | Portal Energy | XP | Gems |
---|---|---|---|---|
1st | 9 | 200 | 100 | 200 |
2nd | 6 | 120 | 50 | 160 |
3rd | 3 | 70 | 20 | 130 |
4th | 0 | 40 | 5 | 100 |
Squad League
Hunt Gems to Win!
Squad League has been separated into a new ranked Game Mode that you can play whenever! Customize your Character Lineup to build a winning Squad and compete against other players for Trophies and glory!
For many players, this will be the most relevant change of this update. The universal roster rotation is going away. Instead of it, each player will be able to pick and edit their own troop lineup.
Lineup Editor details
The lineup editor is fairly simple. When you first open it, you'll find 15 empty slots, 5 for each rarity.
You can pick troops one by one, or tap the "Randomize" button. After you are done, the lineup looks like this:
When your lineup has 15 troops, the "PLAY" button is enabled. You can still switch troops from your lineup whenever you want by tapping on them.
This new format allows players to choose their favourite troops, pick their best evolutions and design specific Squads based on troop synergy; there are many things to explore in this new format!
This customisation also allows a game meta to exist. A meta is basically what defines the most popular and viable troop rosters at a given time, and if a game is well balanced, it evolves over time as new strategies develop. It is thanks to this game depth that websites such as RoyaleAPI have developed around Clash Royale, because players regularly engage with content that helps them update and improve their lineups.
Until now, balance in Squad Busters hasn't been too relevant because troop rosters were random. With this new mode, we expect to see more changes aimed at improving the viability of the most unpopular troop picks.
Although Squad League is available as a separate game mode, it still behaves like normal Gem Hunt. The main difference when compared to the previous system is that now everyone can play in Squad League, even if they haven't completed the World Journey; to play, you just need to have 5 troops of each rarity.
As before, you cannot play Squad League while you are in a Party lobby.
New Chest Taps
After the battle ends, the chest taps you get are:
Placement | Taps |
---|---|
1st | 9 |
2nd | 8 |
3rd | 7 |
4th | 6 |
5th | 5 |
6th | 4 |
7th | 3 |
8th | 2 |
9th | 0 |
10th | 0 |
New Trophy Changes
The amount of trophies lost for bad results is becoming more punishing. This should help make the Squad League leaderboard less grindy, and a better measurement of player strength.
Placement | Old Trophies | New Trophies |
---|---|---|
1st | 10 | 10 |
2nd | 7 | 7 |
3rd | 4 | 4 |
4th | 2 | 2 |

6th | 0 | -1 |
7th | -1 | -2 |
8th | -2 | -4 |
9th | -3 | -7 |
10th | -5 | -10 |

Game Economy Changes
Free Battle Chests
Chest Tickets are being removed from the game! Now you'll receive a Reward Chest after battles as long as you finish in the Top 8.
When the update drops, any tickets you have in your inventory will be converted into 2,000 Coins, which is their usual price in the shop.
The Chest Ticket economy had pros and cons. On one side, having tickets piled up pushed you to spend them in battles, so that you could keep getting more for free. At the same time, it was adding friction to players who wanted to keep playing. Should I be spending my Coins in these tickets? What if I get a bad result and the ticket is wasted? By removing the chest cost, this aversion to bad results is reduced, and players should be less reluctant to keep playing.
Win Streak Removed
As Supercell announced on November 25th, Win Streaks are being removed from the game. You can read the full announcement here, but the first paragraph gives a quite clear reasoning:
Win Streaks haven't been hitting the mark when it comes to feeling truly rewarding. Instead, we realized they've added unwanted tension and hesitation to play, making the game feel less accessible for some players.
This change might be related to the removal of Chest Tickets, in a coordinated effort to improve the player experience.
The best Win Streak in your profile will remain there as a legacy stat for now, and players will receive emotes based on the amount of wins:
Emote | Win Streak Size |
---|---|
Any | |
10+ | |
25+ | |
50+ | |
100+ |
How to spend Coins?
For many players, Tickets and Streaks were the two main ways to spend Coins. What's the new best way to spend them?
There aren't many options left:
- Star Tokens
- Troops in the shop
- Chest Multipliers in the shop
The short answer is that for most players, Chest Multipliers are the best way to spend Coins.
Coin Spending Analysis
The first thing to know is that there isn't a universally correct answer for all players. The main factors are:
How advanced your collection is: if your collection is complete for some rarities, Babies you get are directly converted into Star Points and you can't get extra Star Points from evolutions.
How many taps you usually get in chests: if you can consistently finish 1st in battles, you'll be able to obtain better value from Multipliers than someone who struggles to finish 5th. A player who always finishes 1st, will get an average of 9 taps; someone who finishes 5th will get 5 taps.
Taking this into consideration, we can create a few sub-categories to show how different they become:
Source | Coins | Babies | Efficiency | Unmaxed Eff. |
---|---|---|---|---|
Multiplier Common (9 Taps) | 4,000 | 9.5 | 61% | 100% |
Multiplier Epic (9 Taps) | 4,000 | 7.4 | 47% | 78% |
Star Tokens | 150,000 | 258.4 | 44% | 45% |
Multiplier Common (5 Taps) | 4,000 | 5.3 | 34% | 56% |
Shop Commons | 8,000 | 10.0 | 32% | 53% |
Shop Epics | 12,000 | 10.0 | 21% | 35% |
Multiplier Epic (5 Taps) | 4,000 | 3.2 | 20% | 33% |
Efficiency refers to the value you get from Babies when that troop is maxed. Unmaxed Efficiency is higher, as using Babies to trigger evolutions will provide bonus value. Unfortunately, as your collection is completed, th Unmaxed Efficiency is very rarely used.
Let's suppose that players aim to optimise the amount of Babies they get, for simplicity. If your average taps per chest is high, Multipliers are clearly the best option. If average taps are lower (7 or less), buying Star Tokens directly starts to make sense, specially if several of your troops are already maxed.
The argument for using Multipliers with Epic Chests is that this is the last rarity that you'll complete. As a consequence, when your Common troops are maxed and Babies give the reduced efficiency, Epic Troops will still give you the bonus from evolutions. The Unmaxed Efficiency for Epics (78%) is higher than the Reduced Efficiency for Commons (61%).
Overall, the value of Coins has been reduced because chest tickets were by far the best purchase available. Now that progress is only limited by how much you are willing to play, Coins are transformed into a sort of boost resource. You don't need Coins to progress, but they can make your progress much faster.
Chest Tap Rework
Although playing a battle doesn't require a Chest Ticket, you'll now need to finish at least 8th to receive a chest. This ensures that players can't simply join a battle and be busted in a few seconds to receive a chest.
The new tap obtained, depending on the game mode, are:
Placement | Old | SD | GH | DGH | SL |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1st | 5 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
2nd | 4 | 7 | 8 | 6 | 8 |
3rd | 4 | 5 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
4th | 3 | 3 | 6 | 0 | 6 |
5th | 3 | 0 | 5 | - | 5 |
6th | 3 | - | 4 | - | 4 |
7th | 3 | - | 3 | - | 3 |
8th | 3 | - | 2 | - | 2 |
9th | 2 | - | 0 | - | 0 |
10th | 2 | - | 0 | - | 0 |
SD: Showdown, GH: Gem Hunt, DGH: Duo Gem Hunt, SL: Squad League
Note: taps from the Old system seem much lower because the 0-3 bonus taps from Win Streaks aren't included.
Daily Win Rewards
Every 24 hours you'll be able to get bonus rewards from winning 2, 4 and 6 battles. These rewards don't replace your chests from battle placements, you get both!
For a battle to be considered a win and count in this progress, you'll need to finish:
- Top 5 in Gem Hunt and Squad League
- Top 2 in Showdown
- Top 2 in Duo Gem Hunt
If you lose a battle, the progress isn't reset, it will simply not increase your daily progress.

Treasure Room
This change is more like a rebranding and a new coat of paint over an existing feature.
Squad League is no longer located at the end of the World Journey, but players can still keep earning Portal Energy to unlock bonus rewards. This unlimited track of rewards is now titled Treasure Room instead of Squad League.
As before, Basement Levels have 100 milestones each. The progress needed to complete each of them is still 1,000 Portal Energy.

Starting on December 23rd, you can collect Candy Canes to unlock special skins!

Balance Changes
Troop Balance
The main aim with this round of balance changes is to make offensive troops deal more damage, in order to differentiate their role within the Squad. As a result, a lot of troops are receiving buffs of ~+10% to their Damage and HP.
This is a summarised table for the balance changes, and you can find more details for all of them below.

Ring Grab
Now losing a single troop of your Squad won't drop all your rings at the same time, only one for each troop.
Loot Goblin Rush
The probability of Loot Goblins dropping a Turbo Boot increases from 10% to 40%.
Loot Machines
When you fail to open a Loot Machine due to lack of Coins, the machine will no longer disappear.
Game Balance
More Gems from Busts
Busting troops from other Squads will reward you with more Gems in Gem Hunt.
- Each troop gives 8 Gems.
- A full Squad gives 25 Gems and a Chest Key.
Lucky Find Odds
Lucky Find probability now increases over time, instead of suddenly.
After 2 minutes, the chances start increasing slightly each second. After 3.5 minutes (last 30 seconds), the chances increase 10 times faster per second.
Vine Damage Increase
Vines used to deal 50 HP of damage per second, and this damage increased by 10 HP each second.
Now Vines will deal much more damage, and it will be relative to troop HP. This means Vines will be dangerous even if you have Fusion El Primo.
Vines will start removing 10% of your troop HP per second. This relative damage increases by +3% each second, meaning that your troops could be busted in less than 10 seconds.
Additionally, healing effects are reduced by 80% while Vines are dealing damage.
