Stats Source
The following stats have been collected during the past 2 weeks (from 2024-07-09 to 2024-07-27), by tracking the top 1,000 players of the Global Leaderboard.
This means that only players who were listed in the Global Leaderboard from the start to the end of this period will be included in this blog for some stats. Most stats won't be affected by this limitation, only those that are based on changes over time, which will be labelled throughout the blog.
The Global Leaderboard is a ranking based on trophies, which is a score that is unlocked when you reach Squad League. Trophies are earned or lost based on the battle results in Squad League.
Methodology
The stats used in this blog are not available for everyone through the in-game UI, and were only possible to obtain thanks to the help of Tryso.
This more detailed source of data allows us to find unique and more reliable information, but it isn't perfect, mainly due to how Squad Busters aggregates and stores player stats. Some of the main limitations are:
- Party battle stats can't be separated from Squad League battles
- Troop use counts are based on chests openings, not battles
- There is no way to know how often a troop wins, just how much it is picked
- Stats for all game modes are aggregated together
- Pick counts from new troops can't be compared with older troops
By analysing the data in bulk, we can find relevant patterns, but it isn't possible to find these trends for each individual profile.
A good example to illustrate this is troop use counts. The data only reflects the amount of times a troop has been picked from a chest, but we can't tell in how many battles it has been used. This gives a disproportionate weight to troops that you want to get many of (e.g.: Archer Queen, Tank...), but less to troops you rarely pick more than once per battle (e.g.: Hog Rider, Greg...). Only by comparing stats from different players we can determine if picking a specific troop more often leads to more wins.
Over this blog we'll share some stats that we found to be relevant or interesting, but there are many more that we didn't include or even consider. If there's anything else that you'd like to see, let us know and we'll look into it.
Leaderboard Demographics
Assigned Locations
The location assigned to each player is based on where they created their account (by default); although it can sometimes be changed afterwards by contacting game support.
This means that some soft-launch regions probably have players from other parts of the world, who used VPNs to download the game early. Over time, we expect this initial boost for soft-launch regions to be diluted and lose relevance.
The soft-launch regions were: Canada, Mexico, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Singapore.
There are a total of 72 countries with at least 1 player in the top 1,000, but the players are not evenly distributed. Just the top 10 countries account for more than half of the whole leaderboard. United States is in a clear lead with 179 players.

It's also relevant to look at how many of these players have fully maxed accounts. Of the 1,000 top players, only 52 have maxed their whole troop collection (31 troops). The US also wins in this category, and South Korea stands out as second over the rest. Interestingly, none of these countries were soft-launch regions.

Player Collections
Due to the restraints in the progression system, maxing troops (Ultra Evolution) demands a lot of time and effort, and probably buying some IAPs.
At the time of writing, more than 40% of players in the leaderboard had 0 maxed troops.
The main irregularity in the distribution is caused by Common troops; you can clearly see that this is the first rarity to plateau. More than 400 players in the leaderboard have all their Common troops maxed, showing that once you start maxing some troops, you max all your commons soon after.
Squad Grinders
When playing in Squad League, trophies earned/lost aren't dependent on the strength of your opponents, just on your final placement. Additionally, battles give you a positive amount of trophies on average; even if we disregard bots, each battle creates a net positive of 13 trophies among the 10 players of a room.
This results in permanent trophy inflation, where playing more basically means earning more trophies; playing well will help you rise faster, but it isn't crucial.
The most active players have completed more than 7,000 battles, although the average is much lower, at around 3,000 battles.

The Best Players
If trophies aren't a good way to find the best players, what are the alternatives?
One option is to look at the average placement of each player. These are the players who win battles the most often, meaning players with the best win rate:
Note: none of these players had more than 10% of friendly battles, so we can be fairly confident that these values weren't artificially inflated.

This leaderboard requires players ranked since 2024-07-09 until 2024-07-27. This time period is used to be able to obtain the amount of ranked battles accurately. If a player was unranked in the first sample, we can't know if any of their battles were played outside of Squad League.

Knowing which players win the most often is not only interesting by itself, but essential to find out what their most common picks are. Is it Chicken? Keep reading to find out!
Popular Troop Picks
In Squad League, every player competes with the same active roster, which changes every 12 minutes. This means that picking the right troops is key to gain an edge over your opponents.
If you scroll down to the stats section of your profile, you'll find something similar to this: your most picked characters.
Squad Busters keeps track of the troops you pick whenever you open a chest during a battle, and displays the top 3 troops for each rarity. But we don't just know the top 3; we have access to the pick values of all the troops, for all the players in the leaderboard. With that we can find out the most common picks overall.
Did you know?
Leaderboard players pick an average of 15.3 troops per battle. This average is very homogeneous across the leaderboard.
Breakdown by rarity
The horizontal axis is player rank for both ranks. Pick rates are very consistent across the leaderboard for all rarities.
Common Troops
Usually the chests that you open during the first 2 minutes of a battle will just contain Common troops (61% of the time).
Barbarian and Shelly are the most popular picks of this rarity.
Correlation with Top 3 rate
By giving additional weight to a success metric, we can see which picks are unusually popular among the best players. For example, if we optimise for Top 3 results, the best troops are:
Trader seems to be the most underrated Common troop, but its Pick Rate isn't high, so it may become more popular over time.
TST3 Score Algorithm
The aim of this score is simply to highlight which troops are the most common among good players. If the TST3 value is higher, picks are skewed towards better players; if it's negative, it's usually a pick by the players with worse performance.
If a TST3 value is close to 0, it means the troop isn't correlated with more Top 3s. A way to interpret this is that good and bad players pick it equally often, or that picking it more often doesn't strictly lead to more wins.
We like to use this stat paired with Pick Rate. A positive value of TST3 tells you that players should pick it more often, the troop is underrated; a negative value tells you that it's picked too much, the troop is overrated. Keep in mind that picks can be counted several times within a battle, so picking less can just mean having a single pick, and not pushing for a Fusion.
- TST3: Troop Score for Top 3
- TP: Troop Picks (by the player for this troop)
- TTP: Total Troop Picks (by the player)
- T3R: Top 3 Rate (of the player)
- AT3R: Average Top 3 Rate in the leaderboard
We can compare the general Pick Rates across the leaderboard with the Pick Rates of the top 10% of players:
What is the top 10% of players?
It's simply a filter that we have chosen to narrow down this analysis and see how the best players in the leaderboard compare to average Pick Rates across the leaderboard. This ~10% subset is based on the following:
- 0.85 percentile in Top 3 rate, as a metric of player strength
- 0.25 percentile in battles played, to discard not very active players who may have less reliable Top 3 rates
Rare Troops
Given that several of the new troops have Rare rarity, these pick rate stats are only based on the last few days.
As you can see from the total pick numbers, Bandit and Ice World characters are still far behind in this stat. That's why we think Pick Rate in recent days is more relevant.
Correlation with Top 3 rate
This is how Pick Rates change for the best 10% players:
Epic Troops
Epics are the last category, and although it has a fairly new troop (Dr. T), he didn't change much when added to the game.
Comparing last-3-days stats with lifetime stats, only Witch seems to have a significant change. Our guess is that this could be related to the nerf it received some time ago, which limited the amount of Skeleton spawns.
As you can see from the total pick numbers, Bandit and Ice World characters are still far behind in this stat. That's why we think Pick Rate in recent days is more relevant.
Correlation with Top 3 rate
This is how Pick Rates change for the best 10% players:
All Troops
Given that troop picks are very dependent on rarity, we don't believe that mixing them together is particularly useful; but if you are interested, you can find them below:
