Barely a month later, Supercell brings us another Squad Busters update!
The update is scheduled to be released this Monday, September 16th, and today we get to share everything about it.

Transformers Event
This event starts on September 16th and lasts 2 weeks, until September 30th.
During each of these 2 weeks, there will be a Special Event similar to the Ice and Lava World releases. Among other rewards, you'll be able to unlock the 2 new characters: Optimus Prime and Elita-1.
Optimus Prime and Elita-1 are a new kind of character, known as Special Characters. These troops come from other universes and will remain in the game permanently, but their evolutions are more limited. Special Characters can only reach the Super Evolution, so not Ultra or Ultimate.
The best way to unlock these new characters is through this release event, but they will also be available in the Shop in the future.

Optimus Prime
This hero from Cybertron comes with boosted size and immense Health. Unlock his abilities to protect your Squad while charging into danger!
Optimus Prime is now the normal troop with highest Hit Points (HP) in Squad Busters. For reference, he has 63% more HP than El Primo.
On top of that, he has decent DPS and can even heal your squad!

It's important to note that Special Character Fusions don't have the same multipliers as normal troops. Their Damage boost is still 2x, but the HP only increases by x2.5 instead of x3.
Besides this, Fusion Optimus Prime has the highest HP of any troop you can have in your squad: 15,500 HP. That's even more than a Tree Giant!

Giant defender as big as a Fusion
Optimus Prime has no ability in his Baby Evolution.
⭐⭐🌑 Classic
Attacks with his Energon Axe after taking damage
After taking any kind of damage, Optimus Prime starts attacking with a golden axe instead of his normal attack.
If 3 seconds pass without receiving damage, the axe will be hidden back. This means that he can keep attacking with his axe as long as he keeps receiving damage.
This special axe attack has mich higher Damage Per Second (DPS):

The Hit Speed increases by 44%, and overall DPS by 110%; that's more than double! For reference, this is more DPS than an Elite Barbarian.
The tricky part of this special attack might be to keep the axe activated; unless you are the target of area damage, you'll have to ensure that Optimus Prime is receiving damage.
Note: both the basic and special attacks of this Classic Evolution have an increased melee range: from 1.55 tiles as Baby to 1.8 tiles.
⭐⭐⭐ Super
Heals the Squad when taking damage
This looks like a very powerful ability! Whenever Optimus Prime receives damage, he heals 100 HP for all the members of your squad.
This healing increases based on the amount of Optimus Primes in your squad, but it doesn't stack linearly.

Note that this is simply the amount of HP that each Optimus Prime heals, so if several receive damage, you heal several times.
Example scenarios:
- You have 1 Optimus Prime, and it receives damage: you squad heals 100 HP
- You have 2 Optimus Primes, and 1 receives damage: you squad heals 140 HP
- You have 2 Optimus Primes, and 2 receive damage: you squad heals 280 HP (2x140)
- You have 3 Fusion Optimus Primes, and 1 receives damage: you squad heals 300 HP
- You have 3 Fusion Optimus Primes, and 3 receive damage: you squad heals 900 HP (3x300)
This ability gives you significant protection against area damage, as your squad will basically be immune to small sources of damage.
There is a small but important detail to keep in mind: each Optimus Prime prime can only trigger his heal once every 0.5 seconds.
This limitation might seem small, but it's what will keep squads from becoming invincible against other big squads. You can also notice it in more modest combat, against troops with very high Hit Speed, like for example Heavy. At peak speed, Heavy shoots 8 projectiles per second; so at most, Optimus Prime will heal after 2 of them hit.
Elita-1
This loyal and fearless commander packs boosted size and firepower. Unlock her abilities to harness Turbo and attack with ferocious laser blasts!
Elita-1 is a ranged troop with very high single-target damage and a lot of HP.
Unlike glass-cannons (Bea, Colt...), her HP is almost as high as Barbarian King. This allows her to compete with Tank Girl in a similar role but different rarity.

Giant ranged fighter as big as a Fusion
Elita-1 has no ability in her Baby Evolution.
⭐⭐🌑 Classic
Attacks at time-bending speed when using Turbo
When attacking with Turbo, Elita-1 doesn't simply shoot faster, she shoots 3 projectiles instead of 1. Each of these projectiles (152 Damage) are almost the same as the normal ones (153 Damage).
For a fair comparison, we shouldn't simply look at the basic attack, but what the basic attack with Turbo would look like:

This shows that if this was a normal attack, using Turbo would give Elita-1 +19% DPS. Instead, this special attack gives Elita-1 +170% DPS, almost 3x!
For reference, this is better than Tank Girl with tank in Overdrive (400 DPS), although not as much as Overdrive + Boost (476 DPS). So not the best single-damage troop, but certainly a top-tier if you have Turbo to spare.
⭐⭐⭐ Super
Turbo lasts much longer while attacking
Usually, each Blue Turbo Boot lasts for 1.8 seconds. Having 1 Elita-1 in your squad increases the Turbo duration by 80%, to 3.2 seconds.
Having more Elita-1s in your squad increases this duration boost very slightly. When you have 3 Fusion Elita-1s, you reach the maximum duration of 3.6 seconds (a 100% boost).
New Mod: Unicron Attacks
Event-exclusive Mod
This is not a permanent mod, and is expected to be removed once the event is over. Special monsters that you may find while playing it won't be featured in the Achievements Book.
Unicron arrives as an unstoppable planet that attacks everyone in the map with Megatron Tanks.
Unicron cannot be targeted in planet form, but from time to time, he converts into a gargantuan robot that can be damaged.
With 35,000 HP, this is by far the toughest enemy we've ever seen in Squad Busters!
Even if you stay away from Unicron as he moves around the map, you'll have to fight the Megatron Tanks. These have 6,000 HP and 140 DPS.
Skins & Emotes
There will be 4 new skins themed for this Transformers collaboration:
- Robot Chicken (Super Rare) (with Robot Chicken Emote)
- Robot Barbarian (Rare)
- Robot Archer Queen (Rare)
- Robot Barbarian King (Rare)
Star Chests
Star Chests are a new kind of chest that will give you the most valuable rewards in the game. They only contain Super, Ultra, or Ultimate Characters, or unlock new Characters.
You can open these chests in a whole new tab that will be placed at the centre of the home screen, so they are clearly seen as important for the game.
You'll need to collect Star Tokens, a new game currency, in order to open Star Chests. You can get Star Tokens by Evolving Characters, claiming Rewards, or purchasing them with Coins.
Update Gift
When you first log into the game after the update, you'll receive 10 Star Chests for free! After that, you'll have to spend Star Tokens to open more. The first 3 chests you buy will have a reduced price (20, 50 and 100 tokens), but after that, the price will be 500 Star Tokens per chest.

So basically, you can expect to get 1/10 of the Portal Energy you got before as Star Tokens. 10,000 Babies will give you 12,340 Star Tokens.
Save your upgrades!
If you have troops available to be evolved, it seems advisable to save them for after the update. The rewards you get from 1 Star Chest (500 Star Tokens) are better than those of 5,000 Portal Energy in the World Journey.

Several rewards of the World Journey will be replaced by Star Tokens. The total amount isn't too significant: 750 from Green World to Squad League.

Star Chest Contents
We've mentioned that Star Chests contain Super, Ultra, or Ultimate Characters, but how likely is it to get each of these rewards?
Unlock Characters first!
If there are new characters you can obtain but haven't unlocked yet, we advise you to save your Star Chests for now.
Star Chests give a lot of weight to unlocking characters, 40%! Unlocking a character isn't going to help your progression much, and over time, you are guaranteed to unlock characters by opening normal chests.
Buying chest tickets and opening many chests is the best way to unlock new characters, and will guarantee you obtain more valuable rewards from Star Chests.
Ultimate characters will be extremely rare. If you have already unlocked all characters, on average, for every 1,000 Star Chests you open, you get:
- 884 Super Characters
- 110 Ultra Characters
- 6 Ultimate Characters
This means that on average you'll need to open 167 Star Chests to get an Ultimate Evolution from them.

Taking all these probabilities and constraints into account, the final expected rewards are the ones listed earlier.
Of the 6 Ultimate Evolutions you expect to get over 1,000 chests, 4 come from these "Bad Luck chests" and 2 from normal Star Chests.
Other Star Chest details
- Star Chests can only unlock characters you have available based on your Squad Level. You can't unlock characters from worlds you haven't reached yet.
- Once one of your characters is in Ultimate evolution, it is considered "maxed" and cannot drop again in Star Chests.
- If all your characters are "maxed", you can't open Star Chests.
- If you get a "maxed" character from a Reward Chest, you won't get Portal Energy anymore. Instead, you'll get 1 Star Token for each Baby.
Portal Energy Changes
Earning Portal Energy
To progress in World Journey and reach Squad League, you'll still need to obtain a lot of Portal Energy. If evolutions don't give Portal Energy anymore, how can you level up?
Portal Energy (PE) is now mainly obtained based on battle results. You can earn an unlimited amount of PE from battles as you advance in the World Journey, and once you reach Squad League there is a 2,000 PE daily cap.
New Info
The 2,000 PE daily cap for Squad League was confirmed after the update had been released, so progress isn't truly unlimited, as we originally stated.
This daily cap is independent from the first-win bonus and any PE that you collect from the Achievements Book.

Additionally, players will get a significant daily bonus of 1,000 PE just for finishing once in the Top 5.
More Achievements Book Tiers
The amount of tiers for each task is being doubled, from 10 to 20.
The rewards for tasks keep increasing, until they reach 200 PE with the last tier. In summary this means there will be 4x the amount of PE available in the Achievements Book.
Portal Energy Reduction
With these Portal Energy changes and the announcement of a new world (soon), the requirements for World Journey progression have been reduced by around 20%.

You can see from this chart that the reduction in Portal Energy has been done quite evenly across all the worlds.

Overall the reduction is of 18%, and mainly based on the Lava World.
Ultimate Evolutions
12 Characters from Green World are getting their 5th (and last?) evolution, Ultimate!
This section will cover what each of their new abilities does, providing details that you can't find anywhere else.
Archer Queen
Attacks with exploding arrows more often
Super Attack: Explosive Arrows
The time needed to load the explosive arrows is reduced from 10 to 6 seconds. Every 10 seconds, Archer Queen loads explosive arrows to be shot in her next attack.
Explosive Arrows deal 25% more damage than normal arrows: 222 HP for normal Archer Queen, and 462 for the Fusion.
These explosions deal damage in a small area with 0.9 tiles of radius, and 1.1 tiles for the Fusion. Both have a pushback strength of 50.
Barbarian
Joins the Squad with a Baby Elite Barbarian
Whenever you pick Barbarian from a chest, a Baby Elite Barbarian spawns with him.
This Elite Barbarian is displayed as an ally in your squad, similar to Chicken Hatchlings or Mortis's troops. These Elite Barbarians have full HP and stats, but cannot be merged into a Fusion with others.

Barbarian King
Attacks with his Iron Fist more often
Super Attack: Iron Fist
The time needed to load the powerful punch is reduced from 10 to 6 seconds.
The Iron Fist attack has a push-back strength of 50, and stuns enemies for 1 second. It also deals melee damage in a small area with a radius of 0.9 tiles (1.1 tiles as a fusion).
Bo
Drops Mines more often and Mines last longer
Super Ability: Mine Drops
Bo can only drop a mine by stopping once it has been loaded. This ability reduces the load time from 15 to 8 seconds.
Additionally, the maximum lifetime of each Mine is doubled, from 10 to 20 seconds.
Chicken
Spawns many more Hatchlings
Super Ability: Hatchlings
The timer duration to spawn Hatchlings doesn't change, it's still 10 seconds (1/5 with turbo). What does change is the amount of Hatchlings spawned each time:
- Normal: 1 ➜ 2
- Fusion: 3 ➜ 5
Additionally, the maximum amount of Hatchlings is increased from 3 to 5.
Colt
Bullet Storm charges when attacking Squads
Super Attack: Bullet Storm
The Ultra ability allows Colt to load his Super Attack just by hitting Monsters (NPCs). The Ultimate ability extends this to enemy squads, making Colt much stronger in PvP combat.
Dynamike
Gives a Barrel Bomb spell
Dynamike drops 1 Barrel Bomb spell when he joins your squad, and an extra one when he turns into a Fusion.
Barrel Bomb Details
The massive bang from this bomb is unmatched!
This bomb takes 2 seconds to explode, and when it does, it deals 600 damage to enemies in a radius of 3 tiles.
Here's a quick comparison with the normal Bomb:

The Barrel Bomb cannot be used to destroy Trees or Carrots.

The initial coin stash remains at 10 coins, but Fusion coins are doubled from 15 to 30.

The loot obtained from each tree based on Greg's evolution is:

In summary, you can expect to receive 1 more Gem and 3 more Coins from each tree. This is a ~30% boost for both Coins and Gems, so quite significant even if numbers seem small at first glance.
Hog Rider
Turbo increases attack speed even more
The way Hit Speed boosts affect each troop is quite complex in Squad Busters, see the Baby Archer Queen ability if you want to learn more.
The basic summary is that Turbo increases attack speed by around 20%. Having 1 Hog Rider in your squad increases this to 23%; and more Hog Riders means you get a bigger boost. The maximum is reached with 3 Fusion Hog Riders, which give 60% boost.
This is the same Hit Speed boost that Archer Queen and Barbarian King have, so it can be quite powerful.
Medic
Passive heal gets much stronger and faster
Medic has 2 different heal effects: Passive Heal and Heal Packs. Passive heal targets all the troops of your squad, and Heal Packs. Heal Packs heal much more, but are only given to one troop, the one with the least proportional HP.
Passive Heal is what changes with this Ultimate ability:

Witch
Skeletons move and attack faster when nearby
This ability targets Elite Skeletons that are within a 3 tile radius of your squad.
Enraged Elite Skeletons move 60% faster and attack 45% faster.
Troop Balance Changes
[Buff] El Primo
El Primo has increased Health and does Flying Elbow Drop more often, to elevate his status as a Desert World character.
Hit Points are increased from 3,800 to 4,400.
El Primo now triggers his Super Attack after 4 kills, instead of 5.
[Buff] Medic
Medic has improved healing and stronger Heal Packs, to keep up with recent Health buffs
Passive Heal for Baby Medic increases from 30 to 39 HP per hit. Passive Heal for Super Medic increases from 32 to 42 HP per hit. Heal Packs increase the Heal per Hit from 105 to 136.
All these buffs increase the healing by 30%.
[Buff] Dynamike
Dynamike attacks faster, and dynamite travels through the air faster, to improve effectiveness in prolonged attacks
All the evolutions will have faster attacks, as Hit Time changes from 1.30 to 1.05 seconds; this is a 24% increase in Hit Speed.
- Baby: increases DPS from 77 to 95 (+23%).
- Classic: increases DPS from 106 to 133 (+25%).
- Ultra: increases DPS from 135 to 168 (+24%).
Additionally, projectile speed is being increased by around 30%. This doesn't affect the hit speed, but does improve accuracy against fast-moving targets.
[Buff] Bandit
Super Bandit drops more Gems
Baby Bandit now gives 14 Gems when the Fusion joins the squad.
Super Bandit gives 15 Gems instead of 10, and the Fusion gives 30.
[Rework] Leon
Leon's Invisibility Spell has been reworked to be easier to use and more readable
- Squads do not lose Invisibility if getting too close to an opponent, so it is easier to maintain Invisibility around other Squads
- Squads only go partially (not fully) Invisible, to be easier to examine by opponents
- Squads only become visible when attacking or taking damage, making it easier to reactivate and clearer to counterplay
Overall the Invisibility seems less effective, but it still hides a lot of information from your squad, which remains useful to surprise opponents.
[Buff] Direct Fusions
Some Fusions gave low rewards when picked directly, which affected Lucky Finds. To address that:
- Fusion Goblin gives more Coins
- Fusion Chicken drops more Turbo Boots
- Fusion Bandit gives Gems
- Fusion Penny gives Maps
- Characters that drop spells give an extra one
These changes don't affect the loot from getting a 3rd troop + Fusion, only the direct Fusion.
Mod Adjustments
Crystal Forest
Hero Greg chops Trees faster, for snappier action
Hero Greg's Hit Speed against Trees has been increased by 14%.
More Crystal Trees spawn, and spawn more often, to keep action up
Timeout
Timer no longer speeds up during Final Stretch, to be easier to follow
This means that the timer won't count down twice as fast during the last minute. If you have collected more seconds than the time remaining, you should be safe, at least from timeout.
Timer has less max time and Clock pickups are worth less time as the Battle progresses, to keep the tension up
In maps where NPCs are less abundant, the last minutes might become more challenging.
To give more recharge options, Clocks will also now drop from Glimmers, Trees, Carrots and other sources, and bigger Monsters have better Clock drops
This gives players more flexibility while building their squad, not forcing them to battle NPCs straightaway.
Less Clocks spawn directly on the Map before the Final Stretch
This refers to the random drops that appear on the map at specific moments of the battle.
Hatchling Herder
3 Giant Hatchlings can now Fuse, gaining 3x Health and Gem value, to make capturing them earlier more worthwhile and harder to lose
Hatchlings have 300 HP, so Fused Hatchlings will have 900. This is still much less than the most delicate squad troops, but will make it harder for simple bombs to destroy full herds.
Giant Hatchling Gem value is reduced before it is Fused, to emphasize their Fusion
Many more Giant Hatchlings spawn throughout the Battle, to keep tails long and satisfying
This mainly increases spawn frequencies from once every 60 to 30 seconds.
World Content Changes
Most updates change the order in which characters and mods are unlocked, in order to improve the experience of new players.
Troop changes:
- Bo: Desert World ➜ Green World
- El Primo: Green World ➜ Desert World
- Penny: Beach World ➜ Desert World
- Mortis: Royal World ➜ Desert World
- Battle Healer: Desert World ➜ Royal World
- Nita: Desert World ➜ Beach World
Mod changes:
- 1-Coin Chests: Ice World ➜ Green World
Gameplay Changes
Refresh Lucky Finds
Now when you get a Lucky Find fusion during battles you'll be able to refresh like you can with normal chests.
Instant Turbo Recharge
Turbo recharges instantly instead of after a short delay, so you can tap it all you like without penalty
We already saw a significant reduction in the penalty for recharging Turbo (down to 0.3 s), and now it's being removed entirely. This means that if you want to spend it intermittently, it shouldn't make a difference.
Ice Skeleton Loot
Ice Skeletons always drop 1 Coin when their Ice armor is shattered, to make Ice World starts faster
Previously there was a 1/3 chance of 1 Coin drop, so now this guarantees 2 Coins from these skeletons.
More Respawns
All Trees, Carrots, Hives, Tanks and Chests respawn at 2 minutes, and the Final Stretch
Graveyard Shift Gem Pass
October seasons always have spooky themes in Supercell games. This year, for the Graveyard Shift, new skins will be:
- Werewolf Colt
- Werewolf Heavy
- Undead Barbarian King
- Opera Wizard
- Pam-Buster
QoL Changes
- Action Emotes shown in Battle results play with their animations looping
- Targeting precision has been improved, making it less likely to swap repeatedly between nearby targets
- Leaderboard entries now show Win Streaks when they update
- Several improvements to network and device performance
- Highlight for troops that are already in your squad when opening chests.
- Highlight during battles whenever a troop is destroyed.
